On this page you will find the most recent (2022) Tshwane Borehole Drilling Regulations that you should know before drilling and installation of a borehole. These regulations apply in all areas of Pretoria and Centurion.
The City of Tshwane has no objection to the drilling of a borehole on your property subject to the following conditions:
- In terms of section 39 of the National Water Act, Act 36 of 1998, the following is applicable:
- Boreholes delivering less than 50 kiloliters per day, are in order and no registration of the borehole is required.
- Boreholes delivering between 50 and 100 kiloliters per day must be registered with the National Department of Water and Sanitation.
- Boreholes delivering more than 100 kiloliters per day require a water licence from the National Department of Water and Sanitation.
- Water from boreholes may only be used on the property on which the borehole is drilled.
- Water from boreholes may not be sold to other consumers.
- The internal borehole water supply network may not be connected to the municipal water system.
- The owner is responsible for testing to ensure that the borehole water is safe for drinking purposes.
- If a borehole is to be drilled in a dolomite area, a geotechnical investigation is required beforehand.
- The suburbs Bronberrick and Eldoraigne are underlain by dolomite bedrock. Due to the risk of dolomite instability there, drilling boreholes in these two suburbs are prohibited.
- An appropriate sign must be visible if a borehole exists on the property.
- The use of borehole water is the responsibility of the owner of the property; the City of Tshwane cannot be held responsible for any health, safety or other concern as a result of the use of the water.
